Johann Wolfgang von Goethe<\/b>[<\/span>a]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup> (28 August 1749 \u2013 22 March 1832) was a German polymath<\/a> who is widely regarded as the most influential writer in the German language. His work has had a wide-ranging influence on literary<\/a>, political<\/a>, Christian views, and philosophical<\/a> thought in the Western world<\/a> from the late 18th century to the present.[<\/span>3]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[<\/span>4]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup> A poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theatre-director, and critic,[<\/span>3]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup> Goethe wrote a wide range of works<\/a>, including plays, poetry and aesthetic criticism<\/a>, as well as treatises<\/a> on botany<\/a>, anatomy<\/a>, and colour.<\/p>\n

Goethe took up residence in Weimar<\/a> in 1775 following the success of his first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther<\/a><\/i> (1774), and joined a thriving intellectual and cultural environment under the patronage of Duchess Anna Amalia<\/a> that formed the basis of Weimar Classicism<\/a>. He was ennobled<\/a> by Karl August, Duke of Saxe-Weimar<\/a>, in 1782. Goethe was an early participant in the Sturm und Drang<\/a><\/i> literary movement. During his first ten years in Weimar, Goethe became a member of the Duke’s privy council<\/a> (1776\u20131785), sat on the war and highway commissions, oversaw the reopening of silver mines in nearby Ilmenau<\/a>, and implemented a series of administrative reforms<\/a> at the University of Jena<\/a>.
